Schutte runner-up run leads Bulldogs at season opener

MONONA — Hannah Schutte ran to a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash, leading MFL MarMac finishers at Thursday’s MFL MarMac Coed.

The meet was the first outdoors for many of the teams, including the Bulldogs who had seen their first seven outdoor meets (combined boys and girls) cancelled due to cold, wet conditions. The girls ran to a fifth-place team finish with 46 points while the boys scored 38 points and tied for sixth.

Schutte, the defending Upper Iowa Conference 400-meter champion, came up just short of finishing first in this event, coming in just seven tenths of a second behind winner Jada Mitchell of Kee. Emma Ammons and Rachel Davis took third-place showings for the girls, with Ammons throwing the shot put 34 feet, 7.85 inches and Davis racing to third in the 100-meter dash in 14.76 seconds. The girls were also third in the sprint medley relay, with Maya Butikofer, Davis, Rachel Butikofer and Schutte finishing in 2:09.73.

Freshman Cayden Ball led the boys with a third-place finish in the 3,200-meters, 11:31.52. Zach Trudo was fourth in the event while also placing seventh in the 800 and eighth in the 1,600. Dylan Corlett was fourth in the 400-meter hurdles while the ‘Dogs placed fifth in the sprint medley relay.

The Bulldog boys’ meet at Decorah scheduled for Monday was cancelled due to weather conditions. Both the boys and girls are scheduled to run Friday at North Fayette Valley.
