Monona native identified among dead in Pearl Harbor attack

It took nearly 77 years, but a Monona native has been identified as having been killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor that led to the United States’ involvement in World War II.

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced last Monday (Sept. 10) that the remains of Navy Fireman 3rd Class Robert J. Bennett were accounted for on Aug. 13.

The announcement led to as many questions as answers last week, as Monona residents attempted to remember Bennett or find information about his family.

“There’s not a lot known,” AMVETS representative Roger Bollman said early in the week. “We’re not sure where he grew up – some other community may end up claiming him. There’s been a lot of speculation. I can’t tell you how many people have asked about him.”
