Monona Council learns about Dollar General

The Monona City Council was informed that the group representing Dollar General, Overland Group, is still interested in building a store in Monona.

City Council member Andy Meyer has been in contact with the Overland Group and announced that the company is currently looking around to various areas of where to build a Dollar General store.

A few proposed locations have been ruled out and the Group will continue to search for a viable location. The previous misconception that a Dollar General having to be placed on a major highway was dispelled as the Overland Group said it will start looking along Main Street. There is no set timetable for any action to be taken by the Council or the Overland Group.

The Council has decided to approve the purchase of 10 way-finder signs for $4,480. During the April 3 meeting the Council was hesitant to agree to purchase the signs, due to the fears of previous signs that were damaged by high winds in the past years.

A sign was presented to the Council to showcase the look and sturdy construction. Also, other towns, such as Cedar Falls, were cited as examples for their signage and how effective it could be.  The first sign has been mounted on the corner of Main Street and Iowa Street.

The Council agreed to advertise for window replacement for Garden View. The current windows need to be replaced due to poor instillation. The current windows are not the windows that were installed when the building was originally constructed. According to the Council, the windows were replaced about seven years ago, meaning this will be the third set of windows to be installed in the building. The Council will have to wait and see the various bids offered before making a decision. The total number of windows that will need replacing is 124.

Also being replaced in Garden View is the alarm system that all residents wear. The current system was produced by 3M and has stopped manufacturing that type of system. Technical support and replacement parts are becoming hard to come by so it was decided that a new system be bought and installed.

After hearing various offers, the Council has decided to accept a bid by Stanley Healthcare for total of $23,954.40. There was no time mentioned about when the new system will be installed.
