MFL MarMac musicians earn top marks at contest

MONONA — MFL MarMac is building a reputation as having some of the top musicians in northeast Iowa. At no time did that reputation shine brighter than April 7, when local musicians garnered a pair of Outstanding Performance recognitions at the Solo and Ensemble Contest in Waukon.

Sophomore Max Koeller earned the high school band’s Outstanding Performance award in anybody’s memory while the choir’s “Requiem” group, consisting of Micah Decker, Elizabeth Grady, Rose Grau, Lizzie Herzmann, M. Koeller, Sam Koeller, Ben Miene, Keagan Smerud, Anjela Waterman, Riley Whitney, Chris Wright and Abby Zeeh earned the school’s first vocal Outstanding Performance Award since 2011.

Judges in six centers watch performances throughout the day. From among those they select one as Outstanding Performer.

“The kids put a lot of time and effort into perfecting their music,” Vocal Director Jaydeane Berns said. “It’s highly competitive, unlike speech where several kids can be nominated for all-state.”
