Local legislators discuss voting regulations

ARLINGTON — Northeast Iowa legislators discussed possible changes to Iowa’s pre-election day voting laws during a public forum at the Arlington Community Center Saturday.

Five northeast Iowa state senators and representatives were on hand to speak with more than 50 people, with the voting topic dominating the early part of conversation. Different bills are currently being debated in the Iowa legislature – one in the State Senate and one in the House of Representatives. The Senate bill would require absentee ballots to be received by county auditors by the end of the day on Election Day and would close polls at 8 p.m. rather than the current 9 p.m. closing time while the House bill, which was unanimously approved last week, would require that all counties use absentee ballot tracking.
