Crews remove 1913 Monona water tower

MONONA — A longtime Monona landmark came down piece by piece last week and into this week as crews from Clayton County Recycling have been cutting the tower down.

Plans for taking the tower down have been in the works since the beginning of the year when Mayor Lynn “Marty” Martinson outlined plans for use of funds brought in from the sale of the Garden View senior living facility. Bids were received from several companies, with CCR’s local bid coming in far lower than the others.

Newspaper archives give the history of the structure, which was erected on a lot previously owned by Richard Humphrey. It was noted at the time as a “very desirable piece of ground for this purpose, with plenty of ground for buildings if desired.”
