Cancer survivors raise money to fight deadly disease

NATIONAL - Cancer survivors, their families and friends expected to raise more than $18,000 Friday during the 19th annual Clayton County Relay for Life at the Clayton County Fairgrounds.

Event co-chair Jolene Christeleit said organizers moved the event from its traditional home in Elkader in hopes of drawing more participation from the northern part of Clayton County.

“It had been in Elkader the last 18 years and the reason we changed it was the American Cancer Society this year has totally revamped the Relay for Life,” she said. “They have seen where it has declined over the years, so for one thing they have shortened it up so it doesn't go 24 hours.

“We were trying to get people from the other (Clayton County) communities instead of just Elkader to come,” she said. “We thought the Fairgrounds is right in the middle and it serves the whole county.”
