Bulldogs rally twice to sweep UIC opener

MONONA — MFL MarMac came from behind in both games Wednesday to sweep a doubleheader against Starmont, 11-4 and 15-5.

The ‘Dogs trailed 3-0 in the early stages of the opener before rallying in large part thanks to heads-up baserunning by junior speedster Kyleigh Picha. With the Bulldogs trailing 3-1 and two outs in the third inning, Picha was caught leaning too far off second base and got into a rundown. As she dove for third, Starmont’s fielder dropped the ball as she attempted to tag the MFL MarMac center fielder. Brinan Berger, who had singled moments earlier, advanced to second base on the play and both scored when Hannah Schutte drilled a ball over the Star right fielder’s head for a game-tying double. Schutte gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the night when she scored on a Jordan Schubert base hit, and Jayde Schubert made it 5-3 when she scored on a Lizzie Herman single.

The Bulldogs piled on after that, scoring two in the fourth and four in a sixth inning highlighted by the first home run of Jayde Schubert’s career.

Starmont took advantage of MFL MarMac mistakes in the first two and one-half innings of the nightcap and built a 5-0 lead before things fell apart. Six Bulldogs reached base, including two on errors, and three scored before the Stars recorded an out. Seven more MFL MarMac hitters reached safely before the second out, and by that time the Bulldogs had built a 13-5 lead. Freshman Abby Schellhorn had a pair of two-run singles during the rally, the first hits of her varsity career, and Jordan Schubert delivered a three-run double.

Jordan Schubert overcame early struggles in the opener and picked up the victory in both games, striking out 11 in 8 1/3 innings of work.

MFL MarMac 3, Waukon 1

Jordan Schubert threw a three-hitter as the Bulldogs picked up their first victory of the season Tuesday, 3-1 over Waukon.

The Bulldogs scored the only runs they would need in the second inning as Herzmann, Keri Picha and Schellhorn all drove home tallies. Jordan Schubert allowed only a third inning run while striking out nine. Herzmann had two of the Bulldogs’ four hits.

MFL MarMac played in the North Fayette Tournament Friday and Saturday. It played a doubleheader at South Winneshiek Monday before returning home Wednesday to host Postville. It hosts a JV/Varsity double-dip against New Hampton Friday.
