Bulldog boys’ track team should have better strength in numbers

MONONA — The MFL MarMac boys’ track team hopes more athletes lead to better results during the 2019 season.

Eighteen individuals are running and throwing this year, up from 12 a year ago. Eight members of the team earned letters last year. Among the returnees are the team’s top sprinter, hurdler and shot putter as well as its top distance athletes.

Kyle Kirkestue takes over as head track and field coach, replacing Dan Anderson. Kirkestue has been an assistant and junior high coach in the past and said he is excited about moving into the head coaching role.

“It’s my first time being a head coach so I’m really excited to have the opportunity,” he said. “I’m kind of learning as I go. I learned a lot from Dan, being under him, but I’m still trying to figure things out.”

Kirkestue said he never saw himself as a track coach until getting a call when he returned to northeast Iowa asking if he was interested.
