Sumner-Fredericksburg rallies past Bulldogs

MONONA — Sumner-Fredericksburg rallied from a two-touchdown deficit in the final quarter to top MFL MarMac 28-12 Friday night in the penultimate game of its 2017 season.

The Cougars (3-5 overall, 3-3 in Class 1A, District 2) trailed 12-0 entering the fourth quarter before reeling off four touchdowns in the game’s final 11 minutes, 15 seconds.

MFL MarMac coach Tom Oppelt said his team did a lot of good things in the game. The Bulldogs shut out Sumner-Fredericksburg for the first three quarters and held the Cougars to 28 passing yards on the night.

Sumner-Fredericksburg’s comeback was fueled by its running game, which found something that worked with its power sweep plays that had not worked earlier in the game.

“They didn’t change a lot of what they were doing,” Oppelt said. “They brought one more man that they hadn’t before, but we saw that. We made contact with that kid a number of times in the backfield, we just didn’t wrap him up.”
